Bayer’s Climate FieldView is the most geographically-spread digital farming platform. Launched 2015 in the US, expanded to Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and most European markets, then to South Africa, Kenya, and other markets.
Concrete figures from Bayer (November 2024):
- Available in 23 countries.
- More than 250 million subscribed acres globally.
- (For comparison: 2020 figure was ~150 million acres across 20+ countries. Growth trajectory is real.)
The platform aggregates farm data from equipment, sensors, and field operations, then layers decision-support tools on top — yield analysis, application analysis, harvest progress. Bayer positions it as the data backbone that connects Bayer’s seed and crop protection business to the farm.
Bayer’s framing. From the November 2024 release: “We recently fielded a survey which gathered feedback from 2,000 farmers around the world. Among those using digital tools, farmers overwhelmingly reported improved crop yields, cost savings, and improved crop quality.” Vendor-reported survey result.
Distinctive structural fact. Climate FieldView is not a precision spraying system or autonomous machinery. It is a data aggregation and decision-support layer. Bayer sells it alongside seeds and crop protection products. The data layer feeds Bayer’s R&D and sales — which is structurally the IPES-Food critical configuration: input vendor owns the data layer.

Anchors the input-vendor data layer pattern at multi-continent scale. Distinct from equipment-vendor lock-in (Deere See & Spray, where data flows with the machine) and from independent platform (xFarm / Agrosmart / Taranis, where data flows to an independent platform). - The structural critique (input vendor owns data layer) is not a “Bayer is bad” claim. The platform does useful farm-level work. The critique is that the data flow favours Bayer’s R&D and sales operation in ways farmers don’t fully control.
- Recent legal context: June 2026 US Supreme Court sided with Bayer on Roundup case (per Fence Post, June 2026). Bayer’s commercial and legal position in the agrichemical space remains strong.
