AIFARMS — the Artificial Intelligence for Future Agricultural Resilience, Management, and Sustainability Institute is one of five USDA-NIFA funded National AI Research Institutes that focus substantively on agrifood. Lead institution: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, through its Center for Digital Agriculture. Co-funding: USDA-NIFA + NSF (joint funding is distinctive — most other AI Institutes have single-agency funding). Total funding: $20M over five years (initial 2021 award; subsequently renewed).
Approach: foundational AI advances applied to agriculture
AIFARMS’s distinctive methodology emphasises foundational AI advances — not just applied AI work but fundamental ML theory, algorithms, and methods that advance AI itself through agricultural use cases. The Institute frames this as advancing both AI science and agricultural productivity.

PigLife dataset (May 2026). “A first-of-its-kind benchmark made to train computer vision (CV) systems on pig tracking, furnishing the agricultural industry with accessible and revolutionary optimization.” Developed under AIFARMS by the Office of Data Science Research at Illinois. Distinct from vendor livestock AI (e.g. Lely Astronaut, which is EU-Netherlands robotic milking; see units/lely-astronaut.md).
CropWizard. AIFARMS PI Vikram Adve leads CropWizard, a research project exploring generative AI for agricultural decision-making and optimisation. Per April 2026 coverage by Our Quad Cities, CropWizard is positioned as a “ChatGPT for farmers” — distinct from FCC’s Root AI (units/root-ai.md) which is a Canadian deployment of generative AI for extension. CropWizard is US-academic research-stage; Root AI is operational Canadian federal deployment.
EarthSense. AIFARMS-affiliated work on terramechanics + ML — autonomous vehicle interaction with agricultural soil surfaces.
Madhu Khanna — 2025 AAAS Fellow. AIFARMS Associate Director Madhu Khanna was named a 2025 AAAS Fellow (Alvin H. Baum Family Chair and Director of iSEE; ACES Distinguished Professor in Environmental Economics at Illinois). Her work advances understanding of how policy and economics shape adoption of sustainable, AI-driven agricultural technologies. The AAAS recognition is substantive — distinct from citation-volume indicators.
